More Information:
How many flights will I have?
> We guarantee a minimum number of flights, dependent
upon the course you choose. If the conditions are soarable and appropriate
for training, we will suggest you have longer but fewer flights. If the
weather is so poor that we cannot meet our guarantee we will provide a
proportionate refund, or offer you the option to catch up at a later date.
How will the glider be launched during the
course?
> Launching is mostly winch, although your instructor
may decide to use a motor glider or aerotows in lieu of winch launches
if they think this form of training will be more beneficial to you.
Are Instructors Qualified?
> All of our instructors are BGA qualified and
specialised in ensuring that you receive the most appropriate form of training
for your requirements.
Can I book a course for a weekend?
> Courses are not available at weekends due to
the heavy demand on gliders. If you cannot get to us during the week, then
another way to learn to fly is to join the club and fly at weekends. Your
training is therefore spread over a longer period of time but you will
experience a greater range of weather conditions and become part of a very
successful gliding club.
Where Can I Stay ?
> We can provide basic bunkhouse accommodation
or free camping.
> We are also happy to arrange local accommodation
on your behalf. Please request this when booking your course.
What Should I Bring?
> Don't forget to bring your camera and the following
equipment:-
Winter: lots of warm layers (bring
your own thermals!) and a warm hat.
Summer: shorts, T shirts, a sunhat
and sunblock
All Year: Windproof coat, waterproof
footwear and sunglasses!
How long does it take to go solo?
> Natural ability, age, experience, frequency
of instruction are a few factors that decide, but generally your age +
one third of your age + 10 = average number of launches to go solo (e.g.
age 30 + 10 + 10 = 50 launches to solo, approx.)
When can I fly passengers?
> When you have your Silver badge you can train
as an Air Experience Instructor which will enable you to give introductory
trial lessons. Present law forbids "passengers".
Small Print
Gliding is very weather dependent.
It is impossible to predict the length of your flight, although every effort
will be made to ensure you get the best and safest flight for the weather
conditions. We recommend you telephone the clubhouse (01295 688 121) before
setting out to check that the weather is suitable.
Trial lessons are available to
anyone in reasonable health and aged 12 or over (this is a local club rule).
Please note for safety reasons there is a minimum height restriction of
4ft 6in and a maximum weight restriction of 242 lbs.
Gliding is a continuing changing
sport and we at Shenington Gliding Club have to recognise this fact, therefore
from time to time some details of your course may change from the time
of booking. We hold the right to change any part of your course structure
& membership without prior notice.
