Proverbs
The Scriptures teach two things with reference to Righteousness;
1; Union with Adam/Christ, which has nothing to do with our Personal Character. It has to do with our Legal Standing before God. All men are either -In- Adam or they are -In- Christ.
1Cor 15:21,22. Those who are in Adam are under wrath & condemnation
while those
who are in Christ are Justified. This is a thumbnail of the doctrine of
Federal Headship. It includes the doctrine of Imputation. Those in Adam
have Adam's sin Imputed to them resulting in their being condemned
while those who are in Christ have His Righteousness Imputed to them
resulting in their being Justified.
2; Personal Character & Conduct which has nothing to do with our
Legal standing before God. It has to do with what one is morally in
himself; in his Person, which determines his moral actions. All those
who are still "in Adam" are unrighteous in their Personal Character...
which is just another way of saying they are "totally depraved". They
are Wicked by nature which makes all their actions sin. Conversely all
those who have been united to Christ at salvation are Righteous by
nature "in and of themselves"... Personally in their Character. 1John 3:7. The result is... they no longer sin. 1John 3:9.
This second point is what the Psalms and Proverbs are talking about
when they contrast the wicked with the righteous. They're talking
about what kind of a person you are... either Wicked or Righteous, and
not about your Legal Standing before God. See 2:21.
