STUDENTS'S HEART PROJECT

The program was initiated by a former participant of the 11th Asia Pacific Youth Conference (Hereafter referred to as APYC) in Cambodia in 2004. Mr. Heir Virak, the initiator, said a food beggar struck him when he was eating at a food stand. He said to himself that the beggar must have been so hungry and he wanted to share the food to the beggar. The theme of the APYC “A Better World through You and Me” inspired and challenged all the participants to start to do things for their community, the society and beyond rather than waiting for others to do for them. Mr. Heir Virak, other APYC participants and university students named their initiative as Students’ Heart Program, which has 2 main projects "Food Distribution and Kampong Chnang projects."

Food Distribution project has engaged some hundred hearts of students to cook meals for street kids, homeless people, garbage collectors, cyclo drivers and patients in the hospitals in Phnom Penh. It is currently done once a month. The main finance comes from students and generous individual donors. The purpose of the project is to offer food, to create a unity of students, to reduce the gap between the rich and the poor. The target people are street children, garbage collectors, beggars and cyclo (rickshaw) drivers.

One day when we nearly finished distributing the food, we rode to Phsar Kandal Market at 9pm. There we saw many cyclo drivers looking hungrily exhausted in their sleep, we gave them the remaining food. Out of a sudden, one driver arrived but there was no food for him. This man said, “I am so happy to see the youth in this generation has a caring heart and give food to the poor. One package of food is not much, but the generosity in this that I must appreciate. “

An 8-year old boy told his story to our group members at Wat Than. On that day, he was so hungry as he had no food to eat for the whole day. He said he was forced by his family to polish customers’ shoes, if he comes home without money, then his parents would not feed him. He said, “I want to go to school but my parents force me to make money for them. “

A middle- age woman found lying on the ground next to a wooden cart near Orussey market, we gave them food as though she is homeless or a beggar. Then we found out that she was selling watermelon. She was thankful for the food and she gave us three watermelons as symbol of gratitude. “Your kindness deeply touched me. This is the first time for me to see youth feeding the poor people,” she said.

Stories from the youth, who participated in the food distribution program.

I never thought that I could help people. I am very proud that I now realize that my old unused clothes become useful for the poor people.

I always wanted to help the other but I thought to myself that I needed to wait till I finished my study, got a job and made money. ICA is the place where I could contribute my time and service to cook food the poor.

I felt so moved when a young kid said thank-you to me when she received a package of food from me.

I began to know that there are lots of people who need my help. I promised to work harder to serve the poor.
