What's Going On In The Technology World...
YouTube Receive 1 Billion Views Daily...
9th October 2009, Ed Johnson
YouTube have announced that they are now receiving over 1 billion viewers daily through the, Google run, video sharing website. According to a video released recently by the founder of the website the website is now generating enough content and is easily receiving enough viewers for this outstanding view figure. The video posted online marks the 3rd anniversary of the website purchase by Google, the internet giants. The website was purchased for an incredible $1.65 billion. Since being sold to Google the website has opened the partnership program and had various media and press related news including the recent affair with PRS, the company who own the rights to a huge number of music videos. The website is now, clearly, doing amazing things. Where the website will be taken next is yet to be seen but we have previewed some 3D technology in the making.
Windows Live Mail Accounts Leaked...
5th October 2009, Ed Johnson
Thousands of Windows Live Mail accounts have been leaked online and appeared, only for a short time, on pastebin.com. The accounts are thought to have been hacked using a hacking method known as phishing. The website neowin.net was the first to report the leak of accounts and it has been confirmed by both neowin and the BBC that the accounts posted were genuine and the majority appear to be based in Europe. According to the BBC, Microsoft are currently "investigating the situation and will take appropriate steps as rapidly as possible". It is unsure whether there are more accounts floating around but some suspect there could be thousands more hacked account details that are yet to be release. We recommend that you change your email account credentials if you are using Microsofts email systems and stay alert for various updated news.
Vodafone to sell the Apple iPhone too...
3rd October 2009, Ed Johnson
Yes, another network has signed Apple now. After Orange announced the sale of the iPhone with their network is appears so will Vodafone. One of the largest mobile network service providers have announced that they "reached agreement to bring iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS to the UK and Ireland in early 2010". The network have not yet given an official date for the release of the iPhone with their service but at a guess we think it should be out by the end of February. Who knows what is next for the iPhone and whether it will go on sale for anymore UK network service providers but one thing is for sure, the sale of the iphone on both Orange and Vodafone will definitely boost profits to apple and increase the already hugely popular mobile phone.
Major "hacking" forum ends illegal activity...
2nd October 2009, Ed Johnson
One of the largest online hacking communities, a forum known to most of its members as HF, has released a statement to all of it's users explaining that the forums will no longer accept any illegal activity through it. Hack Forums, a MyBB powered forum, currently has well over 70,000 members signed up. The forums were originally set up as a place for everyone involved in both legal and illegal computer security to discuss flaws and bugs, share hacking tools and tips and train up new users. Although in the past few months the forums have expanded to programming, gaming, graphics and a general haven for technology crazy users to spend hours each day. In a statement placed on a section of the forums at approximately 9pm GMT by the administrator known as "Omni" the post reads, "HF has gone in a direction it was never intended for. It's not the site I had wanted. HF was never meant to be a place for people to be evil." What is next for the forums? Well, we will have to wait and see. Although there are serious talks about a takeover in the forums and a potential buyer purchasing very soon.
Orange end the UK iPhone exclusive for O2...
28th September 2009, Ed Johnson
Orange, one of the most popular UK networks, have signed a deal with the technology giants, Apple. This deal ends O2's exclusive sale and service of the iPhone. The price and release date of the Orange service for the iPhone is still to be confirmed but it has been stated that the phone will be available to purchase with Orange by the end of the year. The new deal between the California designed iPhone and UK mobile network Orange is predicted to boost the phone sales by up to 100%. Orange recently revealed plans to merge with T-Mobile, another equally popular mobile network. If these plans are to go ahead then Orange/T-Mobile will be the leading mobile network in the United Kingdom overtaking O2 and serving over 35% of the mobile market. Image above courtesy of Apple.
Twitter confirm new funding...
27th September 2009, Ed Johnson
Twitter, the ever popular social network, have confirmed in a new blog post that they have "Closed a significant round of funding". The website blog then goes on to name all six of the investment firms. The social network currently makes no money and all of it's financial support comes through funding. The website openly describe the company as one that "spend more money than we make". Though the website has a potential for making enormous profits every month the company have always maintained that they want to stay focused on the website and it's user for now and not get distracted by financial opportunities. Some reports estimate that Twitter is valued at $1bn although we would like to point out that this has not been confirmed. We will just wait to see what happens to the website.
Video screens appear in US magazines...
25th September 2009, Ed Johnson
Yes, it is indeed finally here, the release of the first ever magazine with a video screen featured inside it! The new form of advertising, seen previously only in futuristic and fantastical films such as Harry Potter, has now gone live in the US. The new form of advertising, in which a small visual screen appears between 4 cardboard sheets of the magazine, is said to be similar to singing greetings cards and is in fact designed by the very same company. Of course the cardboard 4 page spread is different from the rest of the 'flimsy' paper pages in a magazine so automatically makes flicking through the magazine difficult. The advantage to the bulky pages, for now, is that they are easily eye catching which is perfect from an advertising and marketing point of view. We will have to wait and see as to how the development continues.
Chrome v3 goes stable...
16th September 2009, Ed Johnson
Google have released the stable version of it's internet browser chrome. The stable version for chrome 3.0 is considerably faster than the stable 2.0 version and comes with lots of tweaks and bug fixes. The version has totally upgraded the GUI to it's tab page and improved many search, grab and save features too. As well as improving speeds and design of the software the new version now supports the video tag in HTML 5.0. This is a huge significance to the browser and has definitely improved all round. However, we are yet to see a version suitable for Apple's Mac software. The developers are already working on version 4 of the chrome internet browser and already we cannot wait to see what handy features this upgrade has. Although the browser is still a long way of being the top browser with Firefox and Internet Explorer still the giants but the chrome browser has made giant steps in the past few months with popularity growing. We will just have to wait and see. Image above courtesy of Google.
New iPod Nano With Camera...
13th September 2009, Ed Johnson
Apple have certainly done it this time with this amazing upgrade for the iPod nano. The new version of the nano was announced on the 9th of September in San Francisco. The upgrade has added a video camera, a microphone, an FM radio and speakers. Not only does this upgrade also come with a larger screen in comparison to it's previous version but the outer shell of the iPod is said to look stunning with gorgeous polished aluminum. A new feature that we were most impressed by is the live pause on the FM Radio. Not only does the iPod have the radio, that in its own right is pretty impressive, but now you can actually pause the radio. This feature is similarly seen on SKY TV. The iPod nano is the worlds most popular music player ever sold with over 100 million sales and we can certainly bet that the sales will have been boosted considerably this past week. Tecy Podcasts, Coming Soon...
11th September 2009, Ed Johnson
After releasing our website only last week we have already been thinking of ways to improve it. One of the latest features will be the TECY official podcasts. We are hoping to release a new one every week and they will include all the weeks technology news and we will give listeners a chance to send in questions and topics they would like us to talk about. The service should be up and running before the end of October and of the podcasts will be available to download right here and hopefully from the iTunes store too. There will be no charge either... we're not unkind! We also hope to feature various guests on the podcasts so if you would like to be a part of it then please send us an email for your chance to be features. We are certainly very excited to be launching this new service and cannot wait to see what happens. We'll keep you updated!
Spotify Mobile Service Launches...
10th September 2009, Ed Johnson
Spotify, the music streaming software, originally for PC's, has now launched a mobile download for the Apple iPod and Google mobile OS, Android. The mobile software allows users to download music and listen to songs even when they aren't connected to the internet. Sadly, unlike the computer service, there is a subscription fee of £10 to use it. Although downloading the mobile software is totally free you must have previously signed up for a premium paying account to use spotify mobile. The key features of the software include the ability to browse through millions of tracks, create playlists, download tracks to listen to while offline and even browse through album covers. This new service will definitely boost Spotify's profits considerably. The mobile software is now available on the iPhone App's store.
Google Book Search Ready for Take off...
9th September 2009, Ed Johnson
Over the past few months Google have been working hard at one of its many developments 'Google Book Search'. The new feature, aimed to allow users to read millions of books online has once again improved and this time with a huge leap. The online service not only offers millions of free books but recently they have upgraded their downloads option to allow multiple format downloads as well as the original online viewer. PDF is one of the many noteworthy formats. One of the most exciting formats now available on the website is EPUB, the format supports a wide variety of applications and devices making reading on the go a whole load easier. There are talks that some MP3 players may even support this in the future. Whatever the case, Google have certainly bumped up their service considerably.
Windows® Prepare for 7...
7th September 2009, Ed Johnson
As you probably already know, the new release of Microsoft® Windows® 7, the latest operating system from the company is due for release on the 22nd of October 2009. But what can we hope for in this new release? Faster speeds, improved GUI, the latest technology in software? Well, yes, all of it! In the new release you can expect a much improved task bar with effective full screen previews of running software. The icons are now larger on the task bar for ease of access and simplicity. Another handy feature brought in to change the GUI and style of the desktop is transparent application and file windows. This allows you to hide any open software or windows simply by dragging your mouse to the bottom right hand corner of the desktop. Sound familiar? We saw this feature on the Apple® Mac OS a while back. It seems that windows have followed suit and added this handy feature. Other improvements on Windows® 7 include an improved search, jump lists for an easier way to access recently opened files, faster and improved internet browsing and better device management.
Apple's "It's only rock and roll" event...
6th September 2009, Oliver Ronaldson
On September ninth apple are holding their Annual event where they normally announce there new iPods each year. So what do I expect to see? Well, here are just a few things that you can expect from the event... Cameras for all of the new iPods. This is a pretty obvious one seeing that case developers who have come out with the case have said that they were told to make camera holes for future releases. High Definition video playback for the iPod touch and the iPod classic models to combat the New Zune HD coming out later this month. A microphone for the ipod touch for integration for many of the microphone necessary apps including Skype and Shazam. A new apple TV. I think that this is coming because apple are trying to clear out there old stock by creating a longer shipping date. I think they may add a gaming center into it to combat the casual market that the ninitendo wii has captured. Steve jobs will also be make an appearance.
Mac Snow Leopard Compatibility...
5th September 2009, Ed Johnson
Mac OS X Snow Leopard, the Operating System upgrade from Apple for Mac computers was released roughly a week ago and since the release of the upgrade there seem to have been no real issues for users reported. The only issues that I have seen with this release are the issues with third party programmed software. It appears that with the upgrade some originally compatible software has now become unusable. While developing the Mac OS upgrade it is reported that Apple tracked many of the third party applications. If the applications showed any signs of error or incompatibility Apple got in contact with the developers and offered their help. It is thought that the developers for Snow Leopard may have started working on the project from as early as June of 2008 to allow maximum time for comparability checks on applications and various other tests. If you have recently purchased Snow Leopard and are currently running it then please get in contact with us, we love to hear from our users and will often even quote them. Tell us what you think of the upgrade, click here to send us an email. Image above courtesy of Apple.
MySpace Music Page Editing...
4th September 2009, Ed Johnson
I recently offered to design a music myspace page for a friend thinking that it would be fairly simple. Having done professional website and graphic design for over 6 years now I was expecting to find it fairly easy, I guess I was wrong. Once I had logged into my friends music MySpace account I was stuck, literally. I couldn't find any way of editing the damn profile page until finding results on google. So why have MySpace made editing of profiles so hard? Well, apparently there are 2 versions of the site, MySpace 1.0 and 2.0. Once looking into it a little further I discovered that this is only for users and not musicians. I guess for now that musicians are stuck with the ever impossible task of editing profiles through unclear and annoying coding. You can supposedly use HTML and CSS to edit the site but unless you know everything about the already existent coding of the profile then you have a lot of guess work and trial and error coding to do. Then figuring the margins is another difficult challenge.
Music Videos Return To UK YouTube...
3rd September 2009, Ed Johnson
In March this year YouTube were required to block thousands of music videos to all UK viewers due to an un reached agreement over music licensing. However all music video blocks to UK viewers will be lifted in the next few days after YouTube, run by internet giants Google, reached an agreement with PRS. PRS, The Performing Rights Society have been paid an undisclosed sum of money which allows licensing on the website until 2012. I am very happy to have the music videos back online and have no doubt that the move will benefit both music industries and YouTube as a website. Being totally honest though I did not notice much of a difference and found that I was still able to view the majority of music videos even with these so called 'blocks'. The blocked videos will be coming back to UK viewers over the next few days but a specific date or time has not been disclosed to us. |
